Monthly Workshop: How to Support People Experiencing Psychosis

March 12 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Whether we work in mental health, addiction recovery, or family support, sometimes we encounter someone in psychosis – hearing voices, hallucinations, or unrealistic thoughts.  How do we talk to people in this state of mind?  What is most helpful for someone having this experience?

We’ll be joined by Todd Foldesi from NAMI R-Place in Iowa City.  He is a Peer Support Specialist with lived experience with psychosis who has run a support group called Hearing Voices and Special Messages for the last 5 years.  This group focuses on support and acceptance rather than treatment, and encourages members to make their own decisions about how to view their voices and the kind of life they want to live.  Todd will share with us what it’s like to hear voices, how we can show support, and will tell us about the structure and evolution of this support group.
